Please look forward to the forthcoming book, War and Tragedy of Khmer Refugees, 1975–1998.
1. Khmer refugees perished not only at “Ghost Mountain”; many also died in refugee camps as a result of starvation and torture inflicted by Thai soldiers and camp guards.
2. On 17 October 1979, Thai Prime Minister General Kriangsak visited a border camp accompanied by military personnel, where 155,000 Cambodian refugees had gathered. He witnessed the tragic deaths of numerous children, while thousands of children and adults suffered from malnutrition, food shortages, and a lack of medical treatment. Sanitary conditions were inadequate. Whenever it rained, refugees endured muddy, waterlogged conditions; during periods of intense heat, they had no shelter.
3. The shortages of food and medical supplies resulted from the Thai government’s refusal to permit the United Nations and other organizations to deliver humanitarian assistance to the refugees. The Thai government demanded financial support and commitments from the United States and the international community, withholding authorization to establish refugee camps until these demands were met.
Detailed accounts of these events are documented in this book, which chronicles a deeply painful chapter in Khmer history.
