(दुखी आत्माओं या प्रेतों की दुनिया)
पेट्टिविसय का शाब्दिक अर्थ है 'पेट्टा या दुखी आत्माओं की दुनिया।' यह दुख और कष्ट वाली दुनिया का ही एक हिस्सा है। कहा जाता है कि प्रेतों के रहने के लिए कोई खास जगह नहीं होती; वे इंसानों की ही दुनिया में ही रहते हैं, जैसे जंगलों, पहाड़ों, द्वीपों, श्मशान घाटों आदि में।
लेकिन चूंकि उनके अस्तित्व की एक अलग दुनिया होती हैं, इसलिए इंसानी आँखों को दिखाई नहीं देते। वे तभी दिख सकते हैं जब वे खुद इंसानों को दिखना चाहें। प्रेतों को देखने का एक और तरीका है 'दिव्य-चक्षु' (dibbacakkhu) या दूर की चीज़ें देखने की शक्ति, जो ध्यान से विकसित होती है।
बौद्ध ग्रंथों और टीकाओं में प्रेतों (भूखी आत्माओं) के कई अन्य रूपों का वर्णन मिलता है, जिनकी पुष्टि पाली ग्रंथो के 'प्रेतवत्थु' में दी गई प्रेतों की कई कहानियों से होती है।
Pettivisaya literally means ‘the realm of the Peta or unhappy ghosts.’ It is a realm included in the plane of misery. It is said that there is no particular place for the Peta to live; they live in the same world as human beings, such as in forests, on mountains, on islands, in cemeteries, etc.
But since they belong to a different realm of existence they are, therefore, invisible to human eyes. They may be seen only when they want themselves to be seen by human beings. Another means of seeing the Peta is by clairvoyance or dibbacakkhu developed by meditation.
In Buddhist texts and commentaries describe so many other forms of Petas the hungry ghost affirmed by many stories of the Peta which appear in the Petavatthu of the Pali Canon.
