The Khmer Sbai: A Precious Ancestral Heritage Dating Back to the Funan Period

The Khmer sbai is more than a piece of fabric draped over the body. It is a precious cultural heritage deeply rooted in the history, traditions, arts, and identity of the Khmer people, from ancient times to the present day. Historical studies and archaeological evidence demonstrate that traditional Khmer attire has evolved over many centuries.

On 14 March 2026, Cambodia’s Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts affirmed that the sbai is an integral part of Khmer cultural heritage, with roots tracing back to the Funan period, and that its use has been passed down from generation to generation.

Among the important archaeological and historical evidence documenting the clothing and social life of the Khmer people since the pre-Angkorian period are a terracotta figurine discovered at the Angkor Borei archaeological site in Takeo Province, dating from the 1st to the 3rd centuries CE, and Inscription K.713 from Preah Ko Temple in the Roluos area of Siem Reap Province. The temple was constructed during the reign of King Indravarman I in the late 9th century and dedicated to his ancestors.

The inscription, dated to the year 815 of the Saka Era, corresponding to 893 CE, records offerings of gold, silver, jewellery, garments, ritual objects, and temple attendants, including dancers and musicians. Notably, it also documents offerings of sbai to the deities enshrined in the temple. These historical records reflect the richness of Khmer social life, artistic traditions, and cultural practices during the early Angkorian period.

The Khmer Sbai: From Ancient Attire to a Symbol of National Identity

The sbai has a significance that extends far beyond its function as a garment or decorative accessory. In Khmer society, it is closely associated with beauty, elegance, dignity, and traditional dress. Sculptures depicting women and deities at ancient Khmer temples also reveal the diversity of personal adornment, jewellery, and clothing during the Angkorian period, providing valuable sources for the study of the history of Khmer attire.

This cultural heritage remains alive today through traditional wedding ceremonies, the Royal Ballet of Cambodia, traditional festivals, and various ceremonial forms of dress. In particular, the custom of Preah Thong holding Neang Neak’s sbai is an important symbol of Khmer wedding traditions, deeply connected to the legend of the origins of the Khmer people.

Each piece of sbai tells a story of the craftsmanship of Khmer weavers, their knowledge of silk weaving, intricate decorative patterns, and the artistic refinement passed down by Khmer ancestors. The continued use of the sbai in traditional ceremonies preserves a living connection between present-day generations and their ancestral heritage.

The Khmer sbai is an invaluable legacy passed down by our ancestors, a living expression of artistic craftsmanship, and an integral part of Khmer cultural identity. It is a heritage that must be preserved, studied, and passed on to future generations.
