Neang Sok (widely known in 19th-century colonial archives as “Mi-Soc”) was a 19th-century dancer of the Royal Ballet of Cambodia during the reign of King Norodom I. For over a century, her iconic photograph—captured circa 1866–1870 by French photographer Émile Gsell—circulated internationally as one of the earliest identified photographic portraits of a Cambodian woman.

# Key Historical Highlights

1. Royal Ballet Dancer: Standing noticeably taller than many of her peers, Neang Sok specialized in Neay Rong (male lead roles played by female performers) in the classical Khmer court repertoire. She was rumored to be among King Norodom I’s favorite court dancers.

2. The Name "Mi-Soc": The prefix "Mi" attached to her name in period captions was a slightly derogatory colonial/vernacular descriptor frequently used for local women involved with foreign men.

3. Marriage to Paul Le Faucheur: In the 1860s, King Norodom arranged for Neang Sok to marry Paul Le Faucheur, a French architect and entrepreneur who worked on the Royal Palace in Phnom Penh. Her portrait was published in Le Faucheur’s 1872 book Lettre: Le Cambodge, captioned simply as "Femme Cambodgienne (Mi Soc)" without noting that she was his wife.

4. Misidentification and Legacy: For over 150 years, western museum collections and publications repeatedly misidentified her portrait as an anonymous "Siamese," "Vietnamese," or generic "Cambodian woman." Recent historical and genealogical research reunited her portrait with her true identity, establishing her direct lineage into Cambodia's administrative history and confirming her status as a pioneer figure in 19th-century Cambodian portrait photography.
